“Darling, when did you open this?” you hear from across the table. Momentarily distracted by her liquid silver satin gown shimmering in the candlelight, you look up, “About 20 minutes before our guests began arriving, dear!” She’s impressed. You remembered. (Of course, your favorite black, dress bow tie, completing your vintage tuxedo, helps exude the confidence you’re feeling on this night to remember.)

Looking around the long dining table, raising a glass of the 2014 Robert Jordan Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon to toast the guests of honor, you’re noticing the decision to pair the wine with venison stew was spot on since its dark cherry notes develop into black currants with hints of tobacco as it opens. Its elegant, soft tannins provide a round, satisfying mouthfeel that dances with the game dish’s sauce as it lingers through the finish.

Noticing a few drops left in your glass, you polish it off, reveling in its smooth, balanced delivery as the flavors slowly fade out to black.

Adjusting your tie at the neck, you wonder if your guests will remember the wine as intensely as you do.

From the stunning 2014 vintage, this new limited-release Cabernet Sauvignon is made with premium fruit from the vineyards on the rocky slopes of Coombsville and the gravely loam of the Oak Knoll district. Rich, elegant and complex, the wine features attractive aromas of dark fruits, ripe berries, fresh sage, soy sauce, licorice, and cedar box. On the palate, sweet core flavors of dark cherry, ripe plum and briary blackberry are entwined with dazzling notes of fresh currants, black figs, cinnamon, clove, and black truffle. These deep flavors are layered with bright acidity, firm tannins, and lingering notes of savory spice, smoke, and fine French oak. A masterpiece from start to finish. Drink now or cellar for 10-15 years.

Suggested Food Pairings: Blue cheese; wild mushroom risotto; seared duck breast with black cherry reduction sauce; grilled steaks, and rack of lamb.

Score: 95
