Katharine Hepburn once said, “If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.” And, oh, my! The 2015 Robert Jordan Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is bursting with fun, starting with Bing cherries, raspberry, and black currant notes. Surprises abound with hints of bell pepper, faint spices, juniper and herbs as the wine reveals itself mid-palate.
So accessible, this Cabernet makes you want to pull the tails of your bow tie so you can wear it loose around the collar of your tux. Should you pair it with steak au poivre or a juicy lamb with rosemary? Whatever you choose, you can hear Hepburn, as if in the kitchen with Spencer Tracy in “Adam’s Rib,” commanding, “I don’t care what you pair the wine with, I just want to get this show on the road!”
With the next sip you’re reminded how well this vintage will age: structure and acid clearly provide the framework on which the mélange of flavors integrate. If Hepburn can break from cultural norms, how might this Cabernet develop over the next decade?
One thing’s for certain: You’ll be wearing your black satin bow tie again when you enjoy the next bottle of this wine.
Although 2015 was a very impressive vintage, the crop yields were relatively low due to lack of rain at the beginning of the year and low temperatures leading up to harvest. These factors meant the vines had to work hard, which shows in this impressive young, elegant and powerful new release from Robert Jordan Wines.
Made with world-class grapes grown on the rocky slopes of Coombsville and the gravely loam of the Oak Knoll district. This dark, rich and full-bodied wine opens up with lofty aromas of wild berries, dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, bay laurel, and roasted walnuts. In the glass, the deep flavors of dark cherry, ripe plum, raspberry, black currant and cassis are perfectly balanced with lavish notes of toffee, cardamom, espresso beans, creamy texture, smooth tannins, and a generous finish that makes every sip count. Elegant and complex. Decant when young or age up to 20 years.
Suggested Food Pairings: Hard cheeses, charcuterie, lamb sliders, hearty stews, herb-crusted pork chops, and grilled ribeye steaks.
